Poker Theory

Having knowledge of the theory of poker will give you a much deeper understanding of the game. They are the details you need to know in order to bring your game up to a new level.

Bankroll Management
The most important aspect of poker is bankroll management. It’s what will keep you from going broke whether you’re a winning or losing player. Your poker bankroll is the money you use to play poker with and managing it means finding the right stakes to play that will allow for growth while limiting your possibilities of ever going broke.

Playing Styles
You shouldn’t limit to one single playing style in poker. Instead, adjust your style based on the game-play at the table. There’s a bunch of different profitable playing styles to choose from, each requiring an understanding of various poker strategies.

Poker Game Selection
Game selection is all about finding the right poker table that will maximize your profit. You want to look for obviously bad players that you can easily exploit (I know it sounds bad, but that’s poker). Keep an eye out for the average pot size and watch the table for a few minutes so you can get a feel for it, before you sit in.

Table Position
Poker is a very position oriented game, meaning that your position in relation to dealer button matters a lot. The closer you are to the dealer button, without being in the blinds, the better off you are.

The Gap Concept
The gap concept is the theory that it takes a stronger hand to call a raise preflop then to be the raiser. The gap concept was originally coined by poker author, David Sklansky, for poker tournaments, but although it can’t be used as effectively in cash games, it holds true there as well.
